An innovative graphic designer who loves targeted data-driven design.
About
Mallory Price is currently a visual journalist and graphic designer at the Gannett Phoenix Design Studio. She has won awards for her news cover designs including first place in Gannett’s Quarterly Awards for “Best Alternative Story Form” and third place for page 1A design by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. Mallory also helped launch digital design in the Phoenix Studio with “The Deciders,” an interactive web platform designed to inform voters about key counties in the 2016 election.
Mallory graduated from Arizona State University in May of 2016 with an undergraduate and graduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. For her graduate thesis, Mallory investigated and reported on water sustainability in the Southwest. To report on her findings, she designed and prototyped an interactive iPad application designed to encourage people to learn about sustainability in an engaging and enjoyable way.
When she is not brainstorming ideas for data-driven news covers or teaching herself HTML and CSS, Mallory spends her time hiking and photographing mountains in Arizona. Her most recently hiking accomplishment was conquering Camelback Mountain (and taking pictures to prove it!). Check out her awesome work here.
The Phoenix Design Studio is a design hub for more than 30 different publications across the United States. Mallory regularly designs entire news, sports or features sections during her daily shift. Some of her favorite covers are displayed below.
During the 2016 presidential election, Mallory worked with a small group of designers, developers and reporters to launch digital design at the Phoenix Design Studio. The data-driven project titled “The Deciders: A look at eight key counties that are going to deicide the election” was featured on the USA Today website. Below are a few examples of Mallory’s design contribution to the project.
Outside of the studio, Mallory works with clients on their branding and social media. For one project, she designed Instagram-ready graphics based on user specifications using stock vectors and her own creative designs in Adobe Illustrator. Mallory is highly skilled in translating user needs into beautiful graphics.
Gannett Social Graphics
In addition to daily news or sports sections in The Arizona Republic, Mallory designs social graphics to promote online articles from azcentral.com on Twitter and Facebook. She often designs these graphics in very short time frames so that the graphics can be published with live photos before the game ends.
As part of her graduate thesis, Mallory organized a team to travel to Lake Mead and create a virtual reality experience that conveyed a narrative about water challenges in Arizona. This project was completed with six GoPro cameras mounted together to capture 360-degree view of the lake, as well as Kolor stitching software and Premiere to create the video. Click and drag to interact with the video, or use your accelerometer on your phone to explore the lake! If you are using an iOS device, be sure you are watching through YouTube to get the full effect.
